2. Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope (1977)

Despite being called Episode IV this was actually the first installment of the incredibly successful Star Wars series. Still popular today. Has earned a total of $460.998 and this figure will no doubt continue to rise.

3. Shrek 2 (2004)

Cartoon ogres with famous voices, a donkey sidekick and a twisted fairytale all combined to net this film a massive $436.471 at the box office.

4. E.T - The Extra Terrestrial (1982)

Drew Barrymore steals the show as a cute child who makes friends with an alien (E.T). The film tapped into a National obsession with space, UFO's and aliens, earning $434.975 in the process.

The first of the three long awaited prequels to the Star Wars trilogy grossed $431.088 at the box office but was widely criticised - mainly as it was crap!

The second film in the 'Pirates' trilogy made even more money than the first film. It grossed $423.416 at the box office.

7. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

The surprise summer hit of made $422.476 at the American box office and resurrected the career of Johnny Depp.

8. Spiderman (2004)

Comic book geeks and those wanting to see Tobey Maguire in Lycra helped this top the box office charts in the summer of 2004. It went on to gross $407.681.

9. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)

The last of the six Star Wars films earned $380.271 at the box office. Despite disappointment at the prequels fans flocked to watch this in droves as it aimed to tie up all the lose ends between the prequels and the 1977 film - not least Anakin turning into Darth Vader.
